Here Between There

January 2002 · Adamski Gallery, Aachen

Here Between There paired the gallery with Aachen’s Dom (Cathedral), dating to Charlemagne’s time — he was buried there in 814 CE — across three groups of work. In the first, two mirrors and three panels of yellow, orange, and blue Mehrzweckplatten (multi-purpose planks) formed a virtual octagon extending past the gallery walls: the white cube on one side, a minimalist representation of the cathedral on the other. The second was three shelves built to Donald Judd’s “shelf” dimensions, holding the complete set of Reclam Universal-Bibliothek editions sold at the cathedral bookshop on a single day; set between mirrors, these books extended into a virtual, infinite but repetitive library. The third was a group of ink drawings hung off the wall, painted on their versos so the color reflected onto the wall; the colors follow Reclam’s cover scheme, which uses yellow for primary texts, orange for translations, and blue for textbooks, and the drawing subject matter corresponded to these categories.
