Structural, Uncontrolled, Hollywood, Political, Auteur, Cosmic, Happy, Sad, and Ordinary are “non-film” installations in which the illuminated area projected by a 16mm film projector without film is painted out to compensate for the difference between the ambient lighting conditions and the projection. The title refers to a list of film genres in Robert Smithson’s Art Through the Camera’s Eye.
Between 2009 and 2010 I installed 5 iterations of this work at
Redling Fine Arts, Los Angeles (April 2009), Laure Genillard, London (October 2009), MoMa PS1, New York (May 2010) and Emerson Dorsch, Miami (2010) and Redling Fine Art at NADA art fair Miami Beach (2010).
