WALLS & LIGHTS, 6757 SANTA MONICA BLVD

Redling Fine Arts, Los Angeles
2013

This exhibition’s full title was Walls & Lights, 6757 Santa Monica Blvd, July 13th – August 17th, 2013, July 13th – August 17th, 2013. It included cement “paintings” and gum-bichromate prints made by capturing the light emitted from spiral bulbs. The exhibition’s title is the material naming of its conditions, circumstances, and duration as an environmental architectural intervention.

This work represented my first work after relocating my studio to Los Angeles. The card accompanying the show had the title on one side and the following quote on the other:

” When the new rear part is joined to that in front,
The church shines, brightened in its middle.
For bright is that which is brightly coupled with the bright
And which the new light pervades,
Bright is the noble work Enlarged in our time
I, who was Suger, having been leader
While it was accomplished.”

— Abbot Suger: On What Was Done in His Administration c.1144-8, Chap XXVIII
